Intralogistics Software: Internal Material Flow Management
Intralogistics software coordinates material movement within a facility: from receiving to storage, production lines and dispatch. The goal is to deliver the right material at the right point with a traceable task history. Start with the flow you need to control, then decide whether an existing module or a separate application fits.
What should an intralogistics module handle?
A module may manage transfer requests, replenishment, line feeding and empty-container returns. Check what triggers each task, how it is assigned and how delivery is confirmed. A module name does not define its scope. Ask for a complete demonstration from the original request through delivery and stock reconciliation.
Module or standalone software?
An ERP or WMS module may reduce integration work if it already supports priorities, mobile execution and production links. Multiple buildings, mixed transport equipment and complex line feeding may justify a dedicated system. Compare ownership of tasks and data, not simply feature counts. Identify who maintains each connection after upgrades.
Clarify WMS, ERP and MES responsibilities
ERP may hold commercial orders, WMS warehouse movements and MES production execution; boundaries vary by implementation. Specify where reservations, transport requests, delivery and consumption confirmations originate. Agree transaction identifiers, retry rules and reconciliation so one physical movement cannot accidentally create two stock postings.
Pilot a production replenishment flow
Create a material request, reserve stock, dispatch the transport task and scan delivery at the line. Then try a shortage, urgent demand and a destination change. Measure waiting time and delivery reliability. For forklifts, tugger trains or AMRs, test lost connections, task ownership and manual recovery with the equipment provider.
Demo and pilot checklist
- Do material, location, container and production-line identifiers match across systems?
- Can urgent requests change priorities without losing existing tasks?
- Are shortages, returns and offline transactions reconciled?
Frequently asked questions
Does intralogistics software replace a WMS?
Not necessarily. A transport-focused system may not cover receiving, counting, picking and shipping. Allocate responsibility for every workflow before selecting the architecture.
Does internal logistics only mean transport?
Transport is one part. Storage, staging, replenishment and production handoffs also affect material availability. Define the facility boundaries and process scope in the requirements.
